I think the big yellow-and-green eye between the plants is unrelated to the monster. Emphasis on “think”. It looks painted, or maybe on cloth, but I don’t think that’s likely unless there is a major plot twist coming. It’s way too big to be a butterfly wing.
We haven’t seen much of the monster, but it looks crocodilian to me. We saw one of those with young in its mouth, so the live around here.

You’re right in that it’s not a real eye, but it is part of the monster. It’ll all make sense when you see the whole thing… probably.
